Good HD Shotgun

Found a well used Mossy 500 12ga ~26" barrel w/removable screw-in no-name choke (looked like a hack job) for $225 at a local pawn. New pkg deals at retails are around $300:thumpdown. Would you go back & grab it? Should I try to haggle? Where can I get shorter barrels? A shotty will round out my arsenal and I want to stay inexpensive to get a couple of same model guns. What d'you think?

A. I would not pay $225 for a *used* Mossberg

B. I would not buy a gun from a Pawn shop

C. Get yourself a Remington 870 Express

I think I paid about $360 after tax and Brady BS fee.

Im wondering,

If I buy an 870 express with a 28in barrel, Can I get an 18in barrel for it that I can change out also?

As one of the Three Stooges would say, "Coitenly!"

Here's just a sample link - a search engine search will yield endless results. I didn't even check Midway USA - they usually have decent prices.

Mossy's make get beater guns but from a pawn shop its worth about 75. USD.

I like Remington 1100's for an auto loader when wing shooting. Myself, I like my 20 over my 12.

I also like Krieghoff for the range or field.

The mossy will be best suited with a pistol grip, a hack saw, and 3" 00 mags.

I got my 18.5" barrel from Cabelas for my Mossberg 500, very quick shipping. I'm keeping the rest of the shotgun stock (fudd), this way I've got both a HD and a hunter in the same gun. The barrel that came with the gun was a 26" vent rib.

Keep looking. Mossbergs are decent, but not at that price. I picked up a used Remington 870 Express Magnum yesterday for $175 so I know that there are good deals out there.

I have several semi-autos and I've been thinking about a pump for home defense. I had my sights set on the Benelli Nova Pump, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this one.

Paid $350 a few weeks ago for a new 870 with 2 barrels - 18.5" HD and a 26" field barrel. There are deals out there - bought mine at a Cabela's.

No tax then... Cabellas ships. Also, Mossberg makes a few barrels for the 870 that tend to be less expensive than a Remmington equivalent.

Havlinsales.com has a 24" on closeout for $90.

He'll probably want less than a 28" barrel if its for home defense so he'd have to factor another barrel into that one at some point.

Re: Good HD Shotgun

For home defense, just buy a new one and test it out well. You never know when you're buying someone else's problem. Used is for collectors and the very hard up for money.

Any Mossberg or Remington pump will serve you very well.

Your right. That's what I liked about that deal. It Includes 18-1/2" Extra Barrel.
But that sale ended today.
Im waiting for my Tax refund. When I get it. then I'll look for one. and get both barrels for sure.

I didn't even notice that it came with the 2nd barrel. A good buy with 2 barrels at that price.

That Mossberg top plastic safety can freeze and break off in 0 degree weather, had one do that to me 30 or so years ago; hope they have fixed that. Got three pumps around somewhere: two Savages and a Marlin made in france, paid less than $225 total for the three............ya, I'm cheap and I do hunt the pawnshops
